As you can see in this map, the country shifted both a lot to the right and to the left. You see many of the suburban counties shift a lot to the left, unless they are a predominantly minority-inhabited county. Then you can also see the Rio-Grande valley in southern Texas take a hard turn to the right; a very very Hispanic region in Texas. The north east shifted hard to the Democrats, but then if you look at exit polls all ethnic groups of people shifted to the republican party, except for whites. More specifically, college educated whites.
As you can see in this map, there is a lot of dark red. Most of this comes from the WWC (white working class) voters in the rust belt geographic region of the USA. You can also see the huge shifts in big Hispanic regions in the Rio-Grande valley and across the state of New Mexico. You see the biggest Democrat shifts across urban/suburban areas, as well as in Utah. It's weird to see it in utah, but this happened because in 2012 Mitt Romney was religiously a mormon, so he did extremely well in Utah. Now that Romney is no longer a candidate, the state has shifted back to where it was.
